i am not joking we need to force teach cooking in schools. like. it is an essential thing for survival. do you know how easy it is to make things if you know even the bare bones shit about how cooking works. we need to teach teenagers how far you can take an onion and some other veggies it’’s sad that people grow up not knowing how to prepare literally anything. and i’m not talking about oh this home ed class taught me how to make chicken nuggets at home i’m talking about learning the balancing of sweetness and acidity and saltiness and bitterness and shit like that and techniques and oil temperatures and how meats cook. it needs to be taught because it’s literally not even that difficult and it matters so much

i truly believe that knowing how to cook is a basic survival concept and the fact that so many people can’t even make simple dishes is depressing as hell this is the sorta thing that should be taught at a young age. being able to take the ingredients you have around your home and turn them into a meal is like, essential and will make life so much better. you don’t need to be a high end chef you just need to understand some things that can be easily taught… but then again maybe the education system is playing a roll against this and ultimately they want you to grow up to rely on mcdonalds for dinner. i don’t know. please learn how to cook for yourself if you’re able. i’m not asking you to hunt for specific ingredients to make some expensive youtuber’s “best” recipe but if you know the basics of cooking you can do a lot with cheap canned ingredients. cooking can be affordable i promise you just need to learn how to make do with what you can get

Can anyone point me towards resources that teach those basics cus I would LOVE to teach my child this stuff but i dont know how to cook

not comprehensive but heres some:

internet shaquille’s basics but especially:

food safety + a recipe to demonstrate

how to learn to cook (just a list of subtopics, no actual tips)

basics with babish s1 & 2, but particularly:

  • freezer meals,
  • weeknight meals,
  • kitchen tools (although the specific suggestions are pretty expensive even with the lower end scale items the basic categories are solid, and you can evaluate what items you will realistcially need - eg. if you dont need to read temp for steaks etc the temp reader will not be relevant) &
  • kitchen care (mid-high advanced home cooking)

basic knife skills

picking the right pan for each recipe

j. kenji lopez-alt’s tips and tricks playlist

egg recipes

a little more complicated, involved, and longer than any of the rest of these but good breakdown of flavor & how and why to use the basic seasoning/flavor profiles

and then recipe channels representing various cuisines:

again definitely not a comprehensive list but it touches on most of the basics

Baking mostly, and teaches you WHY ingredients and techniques work the way they do and helps you learn how to make substitutions and changes based on your personal taste, fantastic channel that also teaches you recipe history

PSA for Switch owners

The latest 11.0 update means that Google Analytics is a thing on the switch and turned on. What that means is that Nintendo has a deal with Google to share with them your data for advertisement purposes.

To turn it off

  1. go to the eShop
  2. go to your profile where your funds and account info is
  3. go down to the bottom of the page
  4. there you will see “Google Analytics Preferences”
  5. select the Change
  6. select “Don’t Share

Please spread the word. Really shitty of Nintendo to just quietly start allowing Google to spy on users for advertising.

I’ve seen this post going around and went “Ah it’s from 2020, I remember I already turned that off.”

Then I turned my switch on this afternoon for the first time in a while and it had an update. And I thought hm. Maybe. I had better just check on that again.

And you’ll never guess what I had to turn off again.

an-american-in-norway:

Norwegian can modify expressions by using a wide selection of short adverbs with little or no stress, that can express doubt, politeness, irritation, etc. How you use these adverbs is one of the things that will indicate your degree of mastery/understanding in Norwegian.

The lady’s marital status in the examples below doesn’t actually change, the adverbs merely indicate what the speaker believes that status to be:

Hun er sikkert gift. I’m sure she’s married.
Hun er nok gift. She’s probably married.
Hun er vel gift. I’d guess she’s married.
Hun er visst gift. I’ve heard she’s married.
Hun er kanskje gift. Maybe she is married.
Hun er neppe gift. I doubt she’s married.

These unaccented adverbs have a fairly regular position in the sentence, they follow immediately after the verb. The same adverb can sometimes indicate slightly different nuances of meaning, depending on tone of voice and the context. Click the link for each one for more information.

has anyone noticed lately how black friday deals or any type of “sale” deals aren’t actually deals. like i had something on my amazon wishlist that was $19.99 before, and now it’s saying it WAS $49.99 but is on sale for $19.99 for a “black Friday deal.” as if it wasn’t just $19.99 two weeks ago at regular price. like these damn websites atp are straight up lying and trying to trick people into thinking something is on sale/is a good deal when it’s not. and this isn’t exclusive to that one item or even just amazon. i’ve been seeing it everywhere. the fuck

There are a several sites for tracking this kind of thing, depending if you’re looking at a particular product or a particular market.

For Amazon, I like to sanity check Camel Camel Camel if a particular deal seems too off.

For example, Amazon is listing these headphones as a -43% sale at $199.99.

CCC backs that up! But also, looks like they do go on fairly frequent (if smaller) sales. Good to know!

image

As a bonus, CCC is pretty easy to check for whatever listing. You just need the listing ID: https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B0CCZ26B5V

From: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCZ26B5V

This kind of thing doesn’t help if they make a dozen listings, or if they have one listing with several options that change the pricing. Still handy though.

This is a helpful tool! This applies moreso to Americans (though non-USAmericans can file reports), but if you notice activity described by OP, that’s called “deceptive pricing” and is illegal under FTC regulations. The FTC has a pretty simple reporting system here. This reporting also applies to all sorts of fraud, from scam calls to identity theft. It may not immediately resolve your personal issue, but it can help the FTC gather enough data and proof to bring a lawsuit against the company.
